Warwick went to St Bees school in the North of England where he completed ‘A’ levels in Maths, Physics and Chemistry. He obtained his Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) at the University of Natal (Durban) in 1970, majoring in Pure Maths and Physics.
He completed his Diploma in Education (Dip.Ed.) at Christchurch (NZ). He has had over 20 years of teaching experience in South Africa, New Zealand and for the past 20 years in Australia.
He was the Author and Publisher of all the books in the original Understanding Maths Series, which were first published in 1988.
In 1986 he was also the Founder and Senior Director of Australian Youth Challenge – a program designed to help teenagers in the key areas of self esteem, motivation, goal setting, communication and study skills.
In this series of Understanding Maths, he is the author of the Year 5 & 6, 7, 8, 9 & 10 books, and all of the books in the Important Facts and Formulas series. Warwick is also co-author of the Essential Exercises series with Jomary Roble.
In November 2010, Warwick transferred the publishing and distribution of the books to Five Senses Education Pty Limited, and now plans to devote more time to writing and editing new titles.

Alan has had over 30 years experience as a teacher and school administrator before becoming a director of EJH Talent Promotion Pty Ltd. He had held Principalships in NSW in both state and private schools and in international schools in Papua New Guinea.
At present he is promoting children’s literature through the NSW Children’s Book Council (NSW President 1994-96) as well as providing part time consulting/writing services for the UNSW Educational Testing Centre Schools Testing Program in the areas of English, Mathematics and Science and conducting ‘acceleration’ workshops.
He followed up his teaching qualifications with a Bachelor of Arts (University of New England), Bachelor of Education (Deakin University) and a Masters in Education (UNSW). His degrees include teaching Maths, Science, Computer Studies as well as the Arts. He has a number of other qualifications including: TESOL (Massey University NZ), Basic Computer Studies Certificate, School Administration Diploma and a number of literary qualifications (Macquarie University). He has served on state and national committees investigating new directions in Science and Mathematics.
Alan Horsfield has had a series of articles on gifted children published in a national newspaper. He has also written articles for the School Magazine, professional journals including Gifted (Mathematics, English/Language) and Literature Base, as well as regular children’s book reviews for Magpies and Australian Multicultural Book Review. A children’s book and an English Test Book have just been released.
In 1995 he was a judge for the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards. Alan is the author of the combined Year 1 & 2, Year 1 Australian Curriculum Edition and Year 2 Australian Curriculum titles of the Understanding Maths series.

Merle trained as an upper primary/lower secondary teacher at the University of London, Goldsmiths College, majoring in Geography.
She was appointed to the British School, Rio de Janeiro, and international preparatory school. Returning to England, she taught children from 7 years to 13 years of age in schools as diverse as a three teacher village school to a large urban school catering for the itinerant population of children of armed service personnel.
On migrating to Australia in 1987, Merle spent a year as Sales manager for the Australian operations of an international cosmetic company before taking a position at Abbotsleigh Junior School in Sydney.
She became involved in the education of gifted children, particularly in mathematics and creative thinking, being responsible for designing programs for a number of camps where gifted children are challenged.
In 1993, Merle obtained a Bachelor of Education from the University of New England, Armidale.
In 1995, she became a teacher of the opportunity class at the Australian International School in Singapore.
Merle is the author of the Year 3 & 4 book of Understanding Maths, which is closely based on the NSW and National Curriculum. She is also the author of the Understanding Maths Australian Curriculum Editions for Year 3 and Year 4.
Dr. Max Shur
Max obtained his Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg in 1961 majoring in Mathematics and Chemistry. After graduating with an Honours degree in Chemistry, he obtained his Doctorate in Philosophy (Ph.D) in Chemistry.
In January 1966 he was appointed to the staff of the well known school, Damelin College, in Johnannesburg where he taught Mathematics and Physical Science for over 20 years. He was the author of several study aids during that time.
In 1986 he and his family emigrated to Sydney. He was appointed to the staff of Kambala Church of England School in 1987 as Senior Mathematics Teacher. He resigned from Kambala at the end of three years to join the NSW Matriculation College, Bondi, where he is the Administrative Master and Senior Mathematics Teacher.
Author of the Year 11, 3 Unit Extension 1 and the Year 12, 3 Unit Extension 1 Books in this series.
He is the co-author of the 3 Unit Preliminary book in conjunction with Paul O’Brien. He is also the co-author of the 3 Unit HSC book in conjunction with Erik Hoekstra.
